Reform measures carried out by Lord Cornwallis, as the first Governor-General of India under the EIC regime, aimed at cleansing the system affected by irregularities as well as reorganizing administration, offer valuable lessons for business organizations.

In the years 1773 and 1784, the British Parliament passed a few acts to bring the East India Company (EIC) under the control of a British Government Minister. Lord Cornwallis, who had earlier served as a British general in American Revolution was appointed the Governor-General of India in 1786. He was given the task of reforming British administration in India and establishing cordial relations with the Indian princely states. He was assigned various responsibilities like reorganizing the administrative setup of the country and carrying out the policy of peace as outlined in the Pitts India Act. In addition to this, he was also required to develop a satisfactory land revenue system, reform the entire judicial machinery and reorganize the commercial setup of EIC.
