In today's competitive business environment, success is highly dependent upon the employee retention. So, if an organization wants to achieve goals through people, better HR practices have to be adopted to bring down the attrition levels. This article focuses on the causes of high attrition rates in various industrial sectors. It also focuses on a few strategies which may be adopted by an organization to minimize, prevent and overcome high attrition rates.

Attrition is defined as a reduction in the number of employees through retirement, resignation, or death. An employee resigns for different reasons. It may be due to the benefits of an alternative job, transfer of the employee's spouse, or voluntary retirement. Other reasons, such as health problems or death also result in reduction of the number of employees and an increase in the attrition rate.

Today, employee retention has become a major challenge for every organization. We can imagine a world in which an employee has many chances for advancement and fulfilling work, and so is satisfied to continue in his present course. However, the reality is different. Employees quit their jobs due to the poor working conditions, low income and lack of opportunity for advancement.
