This article explores the nature of emotion, its relevance in the organizational as well as in the occupational context. Emotion is very complex and flows into every activity as it relates to the self and others. Positive as well as negative emotions influence the organizational work life in many ways and bring out varied consequences. Emotion, directly or indirectly, mobilizes the organizational functioning through job tasks and interpersonal encounters which determine the flow of the work and direction of the organizational effectiveness. Emotional regulation holds sufficient importance in the work place as emotions are charged by the internal diffused mental state of a person as well as by external identifiable sources.

Emotion is an inborn, unbidden, spontaneous quality. It renders, monitors as well as charges life with a number of feelings that make us human. Different authors have tried to define and explain the term emotion, from different points of view. It is a part and parcel in every activity of life. It influences the behavior of the employees in an organization. People carry it with them to the working place. But the role it plays in an organizational life is often overlooked. Researchers reveal that emotions relate to the performance of an employee in an organization. Positive as well as negative emotions determine the climate of emotional experiences of the employees.

Positive emotions create pleasantness while negative emotions invite unpleasantness. It may also be noted that a person's life is highly regularized by secondary emotions like sympathy, jealousy, hatred, pride, etc. Actually, these stem from basic emotions known as primary emotions—love, fear, anger, etc. Human beings are inclined towards pleasure and generally avoid pain or any other negative feelings. But it is very important to experience both positive and negative emotions for a healthy adjustment and existence of the people in the working place and the society, as a whole. Sometimes, the situations may be delightful or depressing in an organization and this stimulates as well as intensifies positive or negative mental state of the employees. As a result, emotional reactions of the employees vary to a great extent.
