Communication has always assumed paramount importance in our lives. However, in recent times, we have become more conscious and aware of the intricacies of personal and professional communication. This is more so in business, as the main objective of a professional is to bring the deliverables on table. The best way to do this is to communicate well in business. Business communication is thus, assuming hitherto unknown proportions and dimensions and this trend is expected to continue. As the world keeps on shrinking into a global village, the impact of culture, media and technology on business communication needs to be given its due significance and researched further.

It is almost 100 years since Mahatma Gandhi said, "In gentle ways we can change the world." The Gandhian concept of non-violence is significantly based on dialogue, discussion and debate to express one's ideas and views, and to convince others of the stand taken. Similarly, a police society is known for its penchant to resolve conflicts and manage crisis through artful and polite communication. In fact, it is the ability to communicate well that poignantly sets apart a lady or a gentleman from a crowd. In quite a similar vein, the erstwhile nuns of Loreto Convent Darjeeling would frequently impress upon their young students, "All are born male or female. Few become a man or a woman. But it is the fewest that become a gentleman or a lady."

The underlying similarity that unifies the above two quotations is their reference to the importance of communication in our lives. This commonality of the two quotations is also indicative of the fact that as a modern and progressive nation, we have been aware of the need and relevance of soft skills in the nation building process to a great extent. The value of communication skills was especially not lost on our policymakers. What perhaps was missing was the esoteric appreciation of the fact and its adept and efficient implementation. This lacuna unfortunately has made a significant dent in our progress as a modern growing nation.
