Identification, Analysis and Solution of the Information Gaps in the Production Planning and Control Function in a Manufacturing Set-up

-- Arnab Saha

In this paper, the author presents a methodology to analyze the information gaps in any of the business functions of an organization, and arrives at a methodology to bridge those gaps. The key point here is to firstly arrive at the information gaps and then understand the root causes for these gaps. Then the root causes are solved, thereby bridging those information gaps. The author also presents how IT is an effective and practical tool to solve these information gaps.

On the Strategy of Supply Hubs for CostReduction and Responsiveness

-- Earl Barnes, Jim Dai, Shijie Deng, Doug Down,Mark Goh,
Lau Hoong Chuin, Moosa Sharafali

A supply hub is a location close to a manufacturing facility where all or some of its supplies are warehoused with the agreement that the materials will be paid for only when consumed. Supply hub is an innovative strategy employed by especially the electronics industry to achieve cost reduction. After tracing the developments leading to the establishment of supply hubs, the paper describes the dynamics of the operation of supply hubs. Case examples are provided to highlight the current practices and finally, some research issues are identified.

Optimization of Warehousing with Correlation Analysis

-- Ramani VV, Dheeraj Akula

This research paper concentrates on the optimality of warehousing in various industries, in particular the fertilizer industry. Many industries, mainly the fertilizer industry, experience irregular demand during the year. This makes warehousing a critical function for the distribution department. A model of analysis warehousing has been suggested here. This model has been tested by application on the warehousing operations of a fertilizer company.

Evaluating Technical Efficiency of Visakhapatnam Port: A Data Envelopment Analysis

-- Mukesh Kumar , Vijayalakshmi

In a world where structures are changing rapidly, it is vital for an organization to monitor their performance continuously. The quest for greater efficiency is never ending as managers are always under pressure to improve the performance of their organizations. In this paper, the technique of Data Envelopment Analysis is used to study the efficiency trend of Visakhapatnam Port during the period 1977-78 to 1999-00. The results reveal that the port was experiencing very low level of technical efficiency till 1990-91 due to underutilization of labor as well as different cargo handling equipment. However, the efficiency has improved significantly since 1990-91 onwards and this port turned to be fully efficient since 1995-96 through 1999-00. This improvement in efficiency was found after liberalization mainly as a result of increase in the trade activities as well as mechanization of port.

Measurement of Technical Efficiency: Issues and Applications

This paper tries to measure Technical Efficiency (TE) in one of the India's largest complex of spinning units (consisting of four plants) using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). This is a non-parametric technique of estimation, optimizing on each individual observation and in the process constructing a discrete piece-wise frontier determined by the set of Pareto efficient units. By using this technique for measuring technical efficiency, many limitations of the conventional method of estimation can be avoided. And it also provides information about the efficient use of different inputs in the production process. By using DEA in this study, it was possible to identify the reasons for relative technical efficiency across the four plants and in the process, the input slacks were also recognized.

Research and Development of a Hybrid Rapid Manufacturing Process

-- F W Liou,J Choi, RG Landers, V Janardhan,
SN Balakrishnan and S Agrawal

This paper presents the research and development of a hybrid rapid manufacturing process being developed at the University of Missouri-Rolla. This process include a laser deposition and a 5-axis CNC milling system. By combining laser deposition and machining processes, the resulting hybrid process can provide greater build capability and better accuracy and surface finish. The hybrid process can build some features that are difficult to build in using a purely deposition process. The issues and related approaches in the research and development of the hybrid deposition-machining process, including laser deposition process, system design and integration, process planning, and sensor selection and control, are discussed.

Integrating Closed-loop Supply Chains and Spare Parts Management at IBM

-- Debanjan Bhattacharya

As more companies recognized the benefits of closed-loop supply chains that integrate product returns into business operations, IBM had been among the pioneers seeking to unlock the value dormant in these resources. The research paper developed an analytic inventory control model and a simulation model to address the issues like choice of recovery opportunities to use, the channel design, and the coordination of alternative supply sources in a project exploiting product returns as a source of spare parts.

Critical Chain

-- Debanjan Bhattacharya

Critical Chain, the book written by Eliyahu M Goldratt is one of the books on project management. In the book he applies the theory of constraints, and the scheduling in a project. In this book, he describes the effects of the constraints and the scheduling on any project. Critical Chain addresses several key problems in project scheduling. Critical Chain project management uses, primarily, deterministic calculations. The book has been written in a very lucid form where each and every step associated with the project and its repercussion is explained.

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs): The Changing Face of Banking in India

Bank Management
Information and communication technology has changed the way in which banks provide services to its customers. These days the customers are able to perform their routine banking transactions without even entering the bank premises. ATM is one such development in recent years, which provides remote banking services all over the world, including India. This paper analyzes the development of this self-service banking in India based on the secondary data.

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is playing a very important role in the progress and advancement in almost all walks of life. The deregulated environment has provided an opportunity to restructure the means and methods of delivery of services in many areas, including the banking sector. The ICT has been a focused issue in the past two decades in Indian banking. In fact, ICTs are enabling the banks to change the way in which they are functioning. Improved customer service has become very important for the very survival and growth of banking sector in the reforms era. The technological advancements, deregulations, and intense competition due to the entry of private sector and foreign banks have altered the face of banking from one of mere intermediation to one of provider of quick, efficient and customer-friendly services. With the introduction and adoption of ICT in the banking sector, the customers are fast moving away from the traditional branch banking system to the convenient and comfort of virtual banking. The most important virtual banking services are phone banking, mobile banking, Internet banking and ATM banking. These electronic channels have enhanced the delivery of banking services accurately and efficiently to the customers. The ATMs are an important part of a bank’s alternative channel to reach the customers, to showcase products and services and to create brand awareness. This is reflected in the increase in the number of ATMs all over the world. ATM is one of the most widely used remote banking services all over the world, including India. This paper analyzes the growth of ATMs of different bank groups in India.
International Scenario

If ATMs are largely available over geographically dispersed areas, the benefit from using an ATM will increase as customers will be able to access their bank accounts from any geographic location. This would imply that the value of an ATM network increases with the number of available ATM locations, and the value of a bank network to a customer will be determined in part by the final network size of the banking system. The statistical information on the growth of branches and ATM network in select countries.

Indian Scenario

The financial services industry in India has witnessed a phenomenal growth, diversification and specialization since the initiation of financial sector reforms in 1991. Greater customer orientation is the only way to retain customer loyalty and withstand competition in the liberalized world. In a market-driven strategy of development, customer preference is of paramount importance in any economy. Gone are the days when customers used to come to the doorsteps of banks. Now the banks are required to chase the customers; only those banks which are customercentric and extremely focused on the needs of their clients can succeed in their business today.
