The integration of markets, new forms of production, degrading standard of human values
have attracted a new element that seeks to harmonize the business actions with social responsibility.
As required in business, it has been one of the main objects of study in academia. The
educational institutions, must therefore, not only teach them in the classroom, but also need to be a model
for those who can learn from them. Therefore, the educational institutions have to put into
practice the social responsibility actions, which may vary in content, direction and extension. The
objective of this paper is to identify the actions, seen as social responsibility, of the top 10 institutions
of higher education in the world and the top 10 in Brazil. To meet the objectives of this work,
an exploratory research was conducted. The results show what the main activities of social
responsibility are, and how the institutions make their disclosure.

PEDAGOGY
Building Competencies in Business Graduates Through Alternative Pedagogies: With
Special Reference
to Undergraduates
-- R Nalini
India is predominantly dependent on the traditional pedagogic tool of lecture method to
impart education. Though case study method and project-based learning are used in top
B-schools in imparting management education at the Postgraduate (PG) level and of late in the
PG classes of Commerce education, it is the lecture method which is still relied upon at the
Undergraduate (UG) level which is of less use when it comes to building workplace competencies. Hence,
the scope for using alternative pedagogies in general and at the UG level in particular, has been
explored in this paper. This paper comprises of an introduction; the literature survey justifying the
need for alternative pedagogies; few popular pedagogies used in other parts of the world both at the
PG and UG level; the alternative pedagogies that have been used by the author at the UG level
and concludes with an emphasis on the need for application of alternative pedagogies in business
education.

Facilitating Learning
Through Online Discussion Forum: An Inquiry Using SEM
-- M S Balaji and Diganta C
Online Discussion Forum (ODF) is being increasingly used as a supporting pedagogical tool
in higher education. The present paper, based on the `theory of online learning' proposes a
conceptual model which relates the influence of seven factors on interaction and perceived learning. The
seven factors indentified are: Internet efficacy, personality, facilitating discourse, reflective
thinking, personalization, assessment and feedback and community. This conceptual model was
empirically tested in a private Indian business school using a multiple class sample of 227 useable responses.
The data was analyzed using structural equation modeling and the findings support the proposition
that interaction significantly impacts perceived learning in ODF. Except for Internet efficacy and
personalization, the other five factors significantly influenced interaction. These findings have
important implications for management educators in the use of ODF for enhanced student learning.
